WHO IS VENERABLE BISHOP ALPHONSE GALLEGOS?

Alphonse Gallegos Apodaca was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The Gallegos family moved to Watts, Los Angeles, California, when Alfonso was a young man. He suffered from poor vision, myopia, his entire life even after several successful surgeries.

He entered the Order of Augustinian Recollects and made his religious profession in 1951. In 1958, he was ordained a priest at Tagaste Monastery in Suffern, New York, where he exercised his first apostolate.

In his first assignment as a religious and priest he will dedicate himself to the formation of the candidates for the Augustinian Recollect religious life, while continuing to further his studies in Psychology.

He served as pastor of San Miguel Church in Watts (1972-1978), and in Cristo Rey in Los Angeles (1978-1979). He would dedicate his life mainly to parish ministry, with special attention to the Hispanics. He was later appointed as the first director of Hispanic Affairs of the California Catholic Conference, which led him to reside in Sacramento, where he became auxiliary bishop in 1981. He zealously spread the faith up until his death in a traffic accident in 1991.

Soon after his death, a feeling arose among the people that Alphonse was a special “soul” with great virtues:  he was simple, welcoming, merciful and kind. He was known to be a man of prayer, servant of the poor and the youth, defender of the unborn and immigrant. All this lead in 2005 to the beginning of the process of his canonization. In 2016, Pope Francis approved the decree recognizing his heroic virtues and proclaiming him as Venerable Bishop Alphonse Gallegos.
