I welcome the Apostolic Exhortation of the Holy Father, Pope Leo XIV, Dilexi Te. I encourage the Catholic community and all people of good will to read and meditate on this timely magisterial teaching. In many ways, the Apostolic Exhortation reflects a convergence of teaching between the current Holy Father and his predecessor, Pope Francis.
As Pope Francis did with Laudato Si’, then later Laudato Deum, on the matter of climate change, he attempted to sustain a pastoral dialogue between Dilexit Nos (He loved us) and now the Apostolic Exhortation of his successor to the Chair of Peter, Pope Leo, Dilexi Te (I have loved you).
Dilexit Nos expounds eloquently on the beautiful mystery of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Dilexi Te continues this reflection by uniting the Sacred Heart of Jesus to the Church’s apostolic mission to the poor. This varied and vital works of mercy are intimately connected to the heart of Jesus.
In Dilexit Nos, Pope Francis also meditated on Jesus’ saving reparation so that all might be saved. The works of mercy share in Jesus’ healing and salvific reparation for scourges of sin and evil in the world. The Church’s mission to live with and serve the poor is part of this sacramental saving work. Pope Leo encourages us to seek the opportunities for personal encounter and communion.
The predecessor of both Leo and Francis, Pope Benedict, also has much to contribute in this moment. One of the most impactful statements in his first encyclical, Deus Caritas Est, was that the Sacred Eucharist we celebrate is fundamentally fragmented if it does not lead us to concrete acts of charity (DCE, 14).
Pope Leo’s reflections echo these same sentiments. Evangelization is hollow if it does not bring us to an authentic human encounter and fraternal communion. By that measure, the temporal and spiritual works of mercy are the most persuasive evangelizing works of the Church. Pope Leo elucidates this dimension of the Church’s mission in Dilexi Te.
Pope Leo’s providential intervention challenges us to recover the spiritual and evangelical dimensions of our charitable work. Because our social services, health care, and education are often the closest encounters with our neighbors and friends we must remind ourselves and reclaim the sacramental dimension and evangelizing character of these ministries. They flow from the mercy, wisdom and joy of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus.

Con agrado recibo la Exhortación Apostólica del Santo Padre, el Papa León XIV, Dilexi Te. Animo a la comunidad católica y a todas las personas de buena voluntad a leer y meditar sobre esta oportuna enseñanza magisterial. En muchos sentidos, la Exhortación Apostólica refleja una convergencia de enseñanzas entre el actual Santo Padre y su predecesor, el Papa Francisco.
Como lo hizo el Papa Francisco con Laudato Si’, y luego más tarde Laudato Deum, sobre el tema del cambio ambiental, intentó mantener un diálogo pastoral entre Dilexit Nos (Él nos amó) y ahora la Exhortación Apostólica de su sucesor en la Cátedra de San Pedro, el Papa León, Dilexi Te (Yo te he amado).
Dilexit Nos expone con elocuencia el hermoso misterio del Sagrado Corazón de Jesús. Dilexi Te continúa esta reflexión uniendo el Sagrado Corazón de Jesús a la misión apostólica de la Iglesia hacia los pobres. Las variadas y vitales obras de misericordia están íntimamente unidas al corazón de Jesús.
En Dilexit Nos, el Papa Francisco también meditó sobre la reparación salvadora de Jesús para que todos se salven. Las obras de misericordia participan en la sanación y la reparación salvadora de Jesús para remediar las consecuencias del pecado y del mal en el mundo. La misión de la Iglesia de convivir con los pobres y servirlos forma parte de esta obra sacramental de salvación. El Papa León nos anima a buscar oportunidades para el encuentro personal y la comunión.

El Papa León expone esta dimensión de la misión de la Iglesia en Dilexi Te.
La providencial intervención del Papa León nos reta a recuperar la dimensión espiritual y evangélica de nuestra labor caritativa. Debido a que nuestros servicios sociales, la atención médica y la educación son a menudo los encuentros más cercanos con nuestros vecinos y amigos, debemos recordar y recuperar la dimensión sacramental y el carácter evangelizador de estos ministerios. Fluyen de la misericordia, la sabiduría y la alegría del Sacratísimo Corazón de Jesús.
