Bishop Jaime Soto will preside at a memorial Mass for Father Michael Carroll, a retired priest who served the Diocese of Sacramento for 52 years, on Friday, Jan. 17, at 10 a.m. in St. Teresa of Avila Church in Auburn.
Father Carroll, who had been retired since July 2016 and was pastor emeritus of St. Teresa of Avila Parish, died unexpectedly on Dec. 27 at his residence in Capwell Road, Cork City, Ireland. He was 77.
A native of County Cork, Ireland, he was ordained to priesthood on June 10, 1972, for service in the Diocese of Sacramento.
He served as associate pastor of Presentation Parish in Sacramento from 1972 to 1976; of St. John Vianney Parish in Rancho Cordova and St. John the Evangelist Parish in Carmichael from 1989 to 1991; and of St. Philomene Parish in Sacramento from 1998 to 1999. He was a teacher and counselor at Christian Brothers High School in Sacramento from 1976 to 1983.
He served as pastor of Presentation Parish from 1999 to 2005 and of St. Teresa of Avila Parish from 2006 to 2016.
Father Carroll's funeral Mass was celebrated by Father Brendan McKeefry on Jan. 2 in Christ the King Church, Turners Cross, Cork City, Ireland.
He is survived by his brothers Noel and Tim, Sisters Myra and Mary, sisters-in-law Eileen and Virginia, brother-in-law Axam, and many nephews, nieces, grandnephews and grandnieces.
