Statement regarding Rev. Callistus Ojike, SMMM

On October 10, the Bishop’s Office received a credible allegation of inappropriate conduct by Fr. Callistus Ojike, SMMM, who was in residence at St. Joseph Parish in Redding, CA. The allegation involves inappropriate conduct with an adult female. Fr. Ojike formerly served as chaplain at Mercy Medical Center Redding. The allegation is unrelated to his service at the hospital.

The Diocese of Sacramento takes every allegation of this nature very seriously and acts promptly to ensure the safety and well-being of parishioners and others who may have been in contact with an accused priest. Accordingly, Fr. Ojike was removed from ministry as of October 15, pending the outcome of an investigation into this matter.

That investigation has now concluded. Fr. Ojike was found to have violated diocesan policy regarding clergy conduct. He is no longer in residence at St. Joseph Parish and he no longer holds faculties to minister in the Diocese of Sacramento. His religious community, the Sons of Mary Mother of Mercy, has recalled him.

The laws of the Catholic Church and the policies of the Diocese are clear: we do not tolerate any conduct that betrays the sacred trust between a priest and the Faithful. We remain steadfast in our commitment to protecting the dignity and safety of all parishioners, students, and those who place their trust in our parishes, schools, and ministries.

We ask the faithful to join in prayer for all those affected by this sad and troubling matter.

Anyone who has been a victim of misconduct by clergy, or who is aware of such misconduct, is strongly encouraged to report it to the appropriate authorities. Reports can be made to law enforcement, to the Diocese, or to both. The Diocese’s Pastoral Care Coordinator can be reached toll-free at 866-777-9133.
