The September-October issue of Catholic Herald magazine has been published. The theme for the feature stories in this issue is "permanent diaconate ministry." The digital edition of the magazine is available at http://faithdigital.org/Sacramento/SAC0918/#?page=0

In the cover story, we meet 27 new permanent deacons serving parishes in the Diocese of Sacramento, who were ordained on June 30 by Bishop Jaime Soto during a Mass in the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament. This issue includes a special report about the 50th anniversary of the 1968 approval by Blessed Paul VI fo the bishops of the United States to renew the permanent diaconate as an active, permanent order of ministry.

Other stories in this issue include a feature on permanent deacons from the "class of 1981," the first class ordained in the diocese, who are "pioneers in ministry"; a feature on "discerning the call," how the diaconate formation process is grounded in prayer and spirituality; a feature on Deacons Larry Niekamp, Gilberto Coss and Jim McFadden, who share the joys and challenges of their ministry through the years; and how the new deacon support structure fosters unity and communication. This issue also includes a special report on the upcoming canonization of Blessed Paul VI and Blessed Oscar Romero at St. Peter's Square on Oct. 14.
