
Bishop Jaime Soto will celebrate a memorial Mass for Pope Francis on Saturday, April 26 at 8 a.m. in the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament, located at 1017 11th St. in Sacramento.

In a memorandum to clergy in the diocese, the bishop said parishes may offer a memorial Mass for the eternal rest of the Holy Father on that same day, and may toll their church bells at the time they offer a memorial Mass on that day. The pope died on April 21, Easter Monday, after 12 years as pontiff leading the Roman Catholic Church.
The funeral Mass for Pope Francis will be celebrated at St. Peter's Basilica in Rome on April 26 at 10 a.m. local time (1 a.m. Pacific) Visit Vatican News for up-to-date news, including live-steaming of the funeral. The Mass begins nine days of mourning (The Novendiales) for the church. The faithful are invited to join this solemn time, especially by using a novena prepared by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops available in English and Spanish.
The bishop has encouraged all of the parishes and schools since the pontiff's death to offer prayers for the deceased pontiff. Students in Catholic schools throughout the diocese are observing the custom of praying the Our Father, Hail Mary, and the Glory Be to the Father, as well as the recitation of the rosary for the repose of the soul of Pope Francis.
