On the Solemnity of the Body and Blood of Christ, Corpus Christi, the whole Church honors the Lord’s Sacrament of Charity, Sacramentum Caritatis. The Most Holy Eucharist is divine charity incarnate. The Lord Jesus gives himself to us. The body and blood he offered on the cross is present to us under the appearance of bread and wine. The awesome presence of our Good Shepherd mercifully places himself in our hands so that we remain in him and he in us.

This year’s celebration of Corpus Christi inaugurates the second year of the National Eucharistic Revival. During this year parishes are encouraged to foster among the faithful a climate of reverence for the Lord’s Sacrament of Charity that permeates the whole life of the parish and the greater community. The Holy Sacrifice of the Mass invites both clergy and faithful to fully conscious and active participation in this Sacrament most holy and divine. The real presence of Jesus comes in mystery to our altars urging us to be conscientiously, actively, and reverently present to him. His communion with us, compels us to bring his presence into all aspects of parish life as well as our surrounding neighborhoods.

The real presence of the Lord Jesus in the Eucharist is the source and summit of human life. The Eucharist brings the real presence of Jesus into our lives so that our lives may bring the real presence of Jesus into the world around us. In the Eucharist, Jesus truly is the Bread of Life. He gives life, restores life, sustains life, and leads us to life eternal.

Our reverence for the Most Holy Sacrament of the Body and Blood of Christ gives us a new way to see our life with Christ. The reverence with which one receives the living presence of Jesus in Holy Communion becomes the charity with which we reverence one another. In this way, we become what we receive.

As we continue the Eucharistic Revival in the parish communities throughout Northern California, I encourage all of us to make the Revival a personal commitment. May the Revival bring us into greater, more personal communion with the Eucharistic Christ and his mystical body, the Church. May the Sacrament of Charity be the wellspring of the works of mercy and justice in our community.

Soul of Christ, sanctify me.
Body of Christ, save me.
Blood of Christ, inebriate me.
Water from the side of Christ, wash me.
Passion of Christ, strengthen me.
O good Jesus, hear me.
Within your wounds conceal me.
Do not permit me to be parted from you.
From the evil foe protect me.
At the hour of my death call me.
And bid me come to you,
to praise you with all your saints,
for ever and ever.

En la Solemnidad de El Santísimo Cuerpo y Sangre de Cristo, Corpus Cristi, toda la Iglesia honra el Sacramento de la Caridad del Señor, Sacramentum Caritatis. La Santísima Eucaristía es la caridad divina encarnada. El Señor Jesús se entrega a nosotros. El cuerpo y la sangre que él ofreció en la cruz están presentes para nosotros bajo la apariencia de pan y vino. La presencia grandiosa de nuestro Buen Pastor se pone misericordiosamente en nuestras manos para que permanezcamos en él y él en nosotros.

La celebración de Corpus Cristi de este año inaugura el segundo año del Avivamiento Eucarístico Nacional. Durante este año se anima a las parroquias a fomentar entre los fieles un clima de reverencia por el Sacramento de la Caridad del Señor que impregne toda la vida de la parroquia y de la comunidad en general. El Santo Sacrificio de la Misa invita tanto al clero como a los fieles a una participación plenamente consciente y activa en este Sacramento santísimo y divino. La presencia real de Jesús llega como un misterio a nuestros altares exhortándonos a estar consciente, activa y reverentemente presentes a él. Su comunión con nosotros nos obliga a llevar su presencia a todos los aspectos de la vida parroquial, así como a nuestras vecindades.

La presencia real del Señor Jesús en la Eucaristía es fuente y cumbre de la vida humana. La Eucaristía trae la presencia real de Jesús a nuestras vidas y así nuestras vidas puedan traer la presencia real de Jesús al mundo que nos rodea. En la Eucaristía, Jesús es verdaderamente el Pan de Vida. Él da vida, restaura la vida, sostiene la vida y nos conduce a la vida eterna.

Nuestra reverencia por el Santísimo Sacramento del Cuerpo y la Sangre de Cristo nos da una nueva forma de ver nuestra vida con Cristo. La reverencia con la que recibimos la presencia viva de Jesús en la Sagrada Comunión se convierte en la caridad con la que nos reverenciamos unos a otros. De esta manera, nos convertimos en lo que recibimos.

A medida que continuamos el Avivamiento Eucarístico en las comunidades parroquiales en todo el norte de California, animo a todos a hacer del Avivamiento un compromiso personal. Que el Avivamiento nos lleve a una comunión más grande y personal con el Cristo Eucarístico y su cuerpo místico, la Iglesia. Que el Sacramento de la Caridad sea la fuente de las obras de misericordia y justicia en nuestra comunidad.
